Kings of Leon, TSB Arena, Wellington, 27 March 2009

Would it be fair to call the Kings of Leon concert the worst concert of the year? No, it would not be fair. What would be fair is calling it the worst concert of the decade.

They did well to play a fair amount of songs from their quality first three albums, but everything on the new album is lacking anything resembling artistic talent and there was just too much from it. Kings of Leon also achieve the Tool award for playing a concert almost indistinguishable from the CD versions of their songs.

Excluding the pre-recorded intro and couple minute encore break, the Kings couldn't even muster 90 minutes.

They should have stuck with being U2's warm up act; U2 and the Kings deserve each other.

I got a copy of the setlist and they dropped four songs off, which partly explains why it was so short. Clearly they weren't having a great time.

i guess they were just rooted after a massive tour. it wasnt as bad as you make it out to be anyway, the old stuff was great.

Here's a challenge: name a worse performance in the last 10 years.

I was disappointed by Tool, obviously, but at least they had naked people swinging from the ceiling. Plus they've never released anything as insipid as Only By The Night.

Worse performances within the last few years - Crowded House and Smashing Pumpkins both at the same venue.
I agree with both your criticisms, but there have been a reasonable number of performances in the last ten years that featured both plus bad sound, and a poor performance (rather than KoL's professional but nothing more performance), and an awful crowd.

They probably dropped songs from the set because Caleb had had enough of the dick in the crowd who kept throwing sticks at him on stage all night. There's always one person who ruins it for everyone else.

they were awsome

worse performance in the last 10 years: any international R&B/rap singer at TSB.

I've seen them many times prior to Only By The Night and always enjoyed their shows but they seem to have lost what made them so special in the first place. Their current record is kind of dull and their shows have become very run-of-the-mill. Those of us who know their back-cat and sing heartily all the way through are becoming a minority. When I see them performing now, it reminds me of a Bill Hicks qoute:
"It's great to be here. I thank you. Ah, I've been on the road doing comedy for ten years now, so bear with me while I plaster on a fake smile and plough through this shit one more time." Replace the comedy with music and you have the current KoL right there in a nutshell.

DetMakey, you are too harsh. I saw the kings here in Christchurch and I thought they were fine, I enjoyed them a lot and it stands to reason that they would be playing a lot off their new album. I agree their last album was their weakest, but it is still a good album and miles ahead of any other band with a similar style.
I saw Tool both times they played here and yes their shows were similar, which was a little dissappointing the second time, but the firest gig was awesome.

The most totally shit concert in the last 10 years was Bob Dylan here in CHCH a couple of years ago.
